What is the issue you’re having?
I’ve been dealing with very inconsistent RedM startup behavior, including:
If you see this, the user interface isn’t able to show
DXGI shared resources errors
ERR_GFX_STATE
RedM sometimes hanging around 67% during initialization
Sometimes needing several client restarts before RedM would launch correctly
My setup uses an NVIDIA RTX 5080 as the main GPU and an Intel UHD iGPU which I need to keep enabled for OBS/streaming. Disabling the Intel GPU is therefore not an option.
What currently seems to make RedM significantly more reliable for me is the following:
- Force all relevant RedM processes to use the NVIDIA GPU
In Windows 11:
Settings → System → Display → Graphics
Set the following applications to:
High performance – NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080
For example:
RDR2.exe
RedM.exe
RedM_b1491_GTAProcess.exe
The important one in my case was the RedM Game subprocess.
RedM.exe and RDR2.exe were already assigned to the RTX 5080, but the RedM_b1491_GTAProcess.exe subprocess was still using the Windows default setting.
After explicitly assigning the subprocess to the NVIDIA GPU, the behavior improved.
Be aware that the executable name/build can change, e.g.:
RedM_b1491_GTAProcess.exe
RedM_bXXXX_GTAProcess.exe
So after a RedM/build update it may be worth checking the Windows Graphics settings again.
- Limit RedM/RDR2 to 90 FPS
The second change that made a noticeable difference was limiting the game to 90 FPS.
Before doing this, my RedM menu/loading screens were often running at around 180 FPS, and startup was extremely unreliable.
In the NVIDIA Control Panel:
Manage 3D settings → Program Settings
Select the RedM/RDR2 game process and set:
Max Frame Rate: 90 FPS
Power management mode: Prefer maximum performance
Since applying the 90 FPS cap, RedM has been considerably more reliable during startup.
- Test this without ReShade first
For troubleshooting purposes I would recommend testing this setup without ReShade or other graphics modifications first.
This workaround is specifically about:
Windows GPU assignment
+
RedM Game subprocess → dedicated NVIDIA GPU
+
90 FPS limit
In my testing, ReShade being enabled or disabled did not appear to be the main cause of the original issue, but removing additional graphics hooks makes it much easier to verify whether this workaround helps.
Important
This is only a workaround based on my own testing, not a confirmed universal fix.
Especially on systems with both an NVIDIA GPU and an Intel iGPU, RedM/Cfx seems to occasionally have problems during DXGI/D3D12 initialization or shared-resource creation.
If you need your Intel iGPU for OBS/QuickSync, you do not necessarily have to disable it. For me, explicitly assigning the RedM game subprocess to the NVIDIA GPU and limiting the frame rate to 90 FPS has been a much more practical solution.
My relevant setup:
GPU 1: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080
GPU 2: Intel UHD Graphics
RedM: Canary
RDR2 build: b1491
API: DirectX 12
Hopefully this helps anyone getting the same random UI isn’t able to show / ERR_GFX_STATE behavior.
