What server should I buy (OVH)?

Hello, I have a question regarding the CPU for the server. I am thinking of buying a VPS from OVH, but their VPS have only 2.4ghz cpu. Will 4x 2.4ghz or 8x.2.4ghz (WINDOWS SERVER) do the job / FiveM Server is multicore? Or is it better to have a dedicated server witch more GHZ on core.

Don’ t waste Money and Performance on renting a Windows Server.
Linux is the way to go here.

If you plan to use OneSync, it will distribute the CPU load better on your different (v)Cores.

RAM depends on how many ppl you are planning to host on your FiveM Server(s)
and which Services you are planning to host besides your FiveM Server(s).
You could start with 8GB RAM and scale up once you get more users.

Try to get a (v)Server with high IOPS, i.e. NVMe-SSD,
especially if you plan to use a lot of scripts/resources.

Regarding Server Location, it really depends on where your potential Users come from.
F.ex. if you plan to host a German Server, its best to host in Germany or Central Europe.

OVH is a nice Hoster, but they are also more expensive than others.
They also specially advertise their Gameserver Roots with a more specialized Anti-DDoS Protection for UDP Floods on Gameservers, but these are even more expensive than the Standard Dedicated Root Servers.

If you tell me where your Users will be from, then I might be able to help you more with choosing the right hoster.

Good luck with your FiveM Project :green_heart:

But the Windows server works much better and does not crash, my question is will 2.4ghz x4 or 2.4ghz cpu x8 do the job?

I mean packages: Comfort / Elite

Just go with windows then, pay a stupid amount of money and remain un-educated.

You are aware that Linux is the objectively worse choice for FiveM servers, right?

Please, stop spreading ‘Linux is fine, Windows sucks’ nonsense, and then end up having random issues that you’ll be unable to provide info for as you were a stubborn cunt who jumped on the ‘USE LINUX IT’S THE SMARTER CHOICE’ train.

We tried many times to get the Linux port on par with the Windows port, but since diagnostic utilities on Linux are complete shit for native code, that’s pretty much impossible.

Put a disclosure on the docs page saying you cant provide tangible ways of diagnosing issues if you use linux.

That will be used actively by “cunts” like me to link to these people about their decision making choices and the advantages of them.

Take your linux is trash debacle of a debate because of troubleshooting features, and throw it out the window.

You’re the Dev Lead, so lead by doing either of the following:

  1. Support linux or don’t.

Make the choice.

And if you do support it, add a disclaimer/disclosure to the docs page saying good luck with issues on linux.

But coming in here with that because you have a vendetta on the average user being inept, when you want to receive actual repos, proper issues and the like?

I refer you back to point one.

I still haven’t received an answer to my question. I know of course that Windows is better with FiveM / OneSync.

My question is will 2.4ghz x4 or 2.4ghz cpu x8 do the job?

I personally use Linux because:

  • I already had 3 Linux VPSs before beginning FiveM development
  • it’s way cheaper (I pay $4/month per VPS)
  • its overall performance and resource management is better
  • I know how to do stuff, and when I don’t, I know how to search how to do it

However, there are some disadvantages:

  • it’s more difficult to manage for inexperienced users, especially if the VPS doesn’t have a desktop environment and remote desktop preinstalled. I am not denying it: Linux command line has a steep learning curve, and it’s very unwelcoming for newcomers
  • the aforementioned issues regarding FiveM’s compatibility with it

In my case, Linux was the smarter choice, however I am not gonna say it’s the smarter choice for everyone.

EDIT: that was in 2020, before CnR. Now I exclusively use Windows Server, and I wouldn’t recommend Linux for a production environment, because there are some issues with it.
