If you try to run FXServer on certain QEMU/KVM hypervisors with the default configuration, you may encounter an error like the following:
The Cfx.re Platform Server requires support for x86-64-v2 instructions (such as POPCNT).
You seem to be running on QEMU/KVM using the ‘kvm64’ CPU type, which does not properly indicate support for these instructions.
The Cfx.re Platform Server requires support for x86-64-v2 instructions (such as POPCNT).
Your current CPU (“Common KVM processor”) does not appear to support this. Supported CPUs include most CPUs from around 2010 or newer.
If you are not using an ancient CPU, this may be caused by using the kvm64 CPU type in QEMU, instead of an appropriate CPU type such as host or host-passthrough.
How to fix
If you have access to the host machine, depending on the hypervisor management tool you use, this can be fixed using a simple configuration change:
- Proxmox VE: Set the Type to
hoston the CPU tab in the VM settings. (documentation, forum topic) - libvirtd: Set
<cpu mode='host-passthrough'in your libvirt XML - virt-manager: Using CPU host-passthrough with virt-manager | Cole Robinson
If you don’t have access to the host machine (i.e. are using a VPS provided by a third party), contact the host to change this.
