Hello! Do I need a dedicated VPS to allow other people (such as administrators and developers) access to the fivem server files (vehicles, ban list, etc), or can I use an FTP client and create a password and give it out? Will they be able to import their own files?
You can do everything you can on a VPS on a normal home hosted computer as well. For a group project I suggest the following:
- Every individual has their own local test server
- You host the server-data folder on a version control like Github or Bitbucket. Bitbucket offers free private repositories.
- Each individual commits their changes to the repository and this gets pulled from on the live server
For ban lists etc, I would be very careful with giving people access to the PC that hosts the server. I would setup a MySQL (I’m just going to assume you use that data storage) user that ONLY has the ability to see (SELECT) the vehicles/ban list. If you need them to alter information, I would do that via in-game controls like a menu or commands (/ban or /unban etc)
Understood, but I have a few questions.
- How do I set up a MySQL?
- Do I need to teach everybody how to set up their own server?
- Do I need a separate computer to host the VPS?
- Is their a universal site everyone can access the files from without using Github?
- Do I need a server OS, and how do other people access the host computer?
- Is there a way to make it so people are able to make live updates in the server without the owner being present?
- Does any of this cost money, and if so, how much?
Google it. There are 100s of tutorials that explain how to set it up (this is non FiveM related)
If your developers don’t know how to setup a server, they shouldn’t be your developers
No, you rent a VPS to host your production FiveM server. Use local servers to test and code (on each developers PC)
There are websites like Bitbucket.org that have private version control. Or you can setup a folder on a VPS that everyone can access via FTP but that is very vulnerable to data corruption and you won’t be able to undo changes if multiple people are using it.
The VPS provider will allow you to install an OS. I advise you to get Ubuntu for the production server. If you don’t know anything and aren’t afraid to pay for a Windows license, get a Windows VPS. They gain access to it by creating users. Depends on the OS.
The only way is to give them access to the resources folder on the server via FTP. I wouldn’t fiddle around with changes on a production server though. Only restart it for hotfixes or larger updates.
Developing locally will cost you $0. Hosting a server on your own PC will cost you $0 (Theoretically power, but we’ll just take that out). Renting a VPS can start as low as $1 per month, but I advise you to get a VPS with around 1GB or 2GB of RAM. This will cost you between $5-$10. I would recommend Skysilk.com, DigitalOcean.com, OVH.com or others like Kimsurfi.
could you show me how to do that through git hub?
