RedM won't launch — Failed to verify the signature of the elevation helper

What is the issue you’re having?

RedM will not launch. It immediately crashes with:

“Failed to verify the signature of the elevation helper.”

I have already tried reinstalling/resetting RedM and Rockstar Games Launcher, restarting my PC, checking Windows Security, and resetting RedM’s local data.

I investigated the signature issue and found:

  • RGL-ElevationHelper.exe inside RedM has a valid digital signature.
  • The Rockstar Launcher bundled inside RedM is version 1.0.53.576.
  • My normally installed Rockstar Games Launcher is version 1.0.108.2970.
  • RedM’s bundled Launcher.exe, LauncherPatcher.exe, RockstarService.exe, and RockstarSteamHelper.exe all use a Rockstar Games signing certificate that expired on 17/02/2023.
  • These files have no timestamp certificate.
  • PowerShell reports: “A required certificate is not within its validity period when verifying against the current system clock or the timestamp in the signed file.”
  • If I rename the RedM game-storage\launcher folder, RedM recreates it with the exact same version 1.0.53.576 and the same certificate problem.
  • sfc /scannow completed successfully with no integrity violations.
  • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth completed successfully.
  • Windows Time has been synchronized successfully.
  • My normal Rockstar Games Launcher executable has a valid digital signature.
  • The RedM RGL-ElevationHelper.exe itself reports as Valid.

The exact RedM error window says:

“Failed to verify the signature of the elevation helper.”

This appears to be a RedM client/package issue where RedM is repeatedly downloading or recreating an outdated Rockstar Launcher package (1.0.53.576) whose signing certificate expired in 2023.

Could someone please confirm whether 1.0.53.576 is expected for the Rockstar launcher bundled with RedM, or whether RedM should currently be using a newer launcher package?

I can provide the full RedM logs, crash information, PowerShell signature output, and any other diagnostics required.

What have you tried already to fix the issue?

I have tried the following:

  • Fully restarted my PC.
  • Closed all RedM and Rockstar processes through Task Manager.
  • Reinstalled/reset RedM.
  • Reinstalled/updated Rockstar Games Launcher.
  • Confirmed my installed Rockstar Games Launcher is version 1.0.108.2970.
  • Checked Windows Security / Protection History for anything blocking RedM or Rockstar.
  • Checked the digital signature of the installed Rockstar Launcher — Windows reports the signature is valid.
  • Checked the digital signature of RedM.exe — valid.
  • Checked the digital signature of RedM’s RGL-ElevationHelper.exe — valid.
  • Deleted/renamed RedM’s local application data and allowed RedM to recreate it.
  • Renamed RedM’s game-storage\launcher folder and allowed RedM to recreate it. It repeatedly recreates Rockstar Launcher version 1.0.53.576.
  • Checked the bundled Rockstar launcher files with PowerShell. Launcher.exe, LauncherPatcher.exe, RockstarService.exe and RockstarSteamHelper.exe all report a certificate validity error.
  • Confirmed those files use a Rockstar Games certificate that expired on 17/02/2023 and have no timestamp certificate.
  • Started the Windows Software Protection service and confirmed it runs.
  • Confirmed Cryptographic Services, Windows Event Log and RPC are running.
  • Ran sfc /scannow — Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations.
  • Ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth — completed successfully.
  • Started the Windows Time service and successfully ran w32tm /resync.
  • Checked Windows Event Viewer / CodeIntegrity logs; there was no Code Integrity event corresponding to the RedM crash.
  • Confirmed the exact error remains: “Failed to verify the signature of the elevation helper.”
