I know that home-hosted servers are discouraged, and for this reason I do have a Zap hosted server waiting in the wings. I am not 100% pleased with it, and I am considering getting something else.
I have experience running servers from before I became disabled and retired. And my dev server on my home PC has no problems with my reaching the outside world. I have very reliable and fast residential Internet service.
As a casual estimate, what sort of hardware is recommended for a 48 slot server? Processor, RAM, SSD storage, etc. Graphics not so much, as this server will be headless. I’ll be using Linux, if that makes a difference.
Also, I would expect my uplink speed of my network would be the deciding factor. Again with 48 slots, what is the recommended minimum upload speed for a server.
I know more is always better. But in the long run, it may be more cost-effective for me to upgrade my home Internet than to pay for hosting. I’m on a fixed income (since I am disabled) and my proposed server is just a hobby for me.
Thanks in advance!
Disclaimer: I am neither a developer nor a programmer.

Greetings,
My first opinion
Mostly the problem for your home hosted server would be your protection because your throwing your own ip address into the public so people with harm can try and ddos you. You and your ISP wont be happy when that happends.
My second opinion
If you still wanna continue i would recommand to use an spare pc you got laying arround instead of an pc for self use. because you want the best expierence for people and if you using some of the resources of pc it will affect the ingame expierence aswell.
kind regard,

Hey, @anykeys , love the name. Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, I had thought of that. In this assessment, I am considering the costs involve to upgrade to a business tier service with my provider. That should help with any Ddos issues, as that is included in the service plan. I just need to know the level of service (uplink speed) I will need.

Way ahead of you. I have other machines facing the big scary Internet. They run media and other utility stuff for the family. I run three single board computers for these little tasks. I spread them between two Raspberry Pi units a Banana Pi. My house is PC poor, too. Four adults, two desktops, four laptops, five tablets (I think) and four phones all sucking up bits and bytes. If I end up hosting here, I’ll build another machine for this. My dev machine is on my desktop PC but I would not use it for production. That’s IT 101.
Hey,
Thanks for the compliment for the name.
i would think 250mb would be enough even with your amount of devices but you could go to somthing closer to 500mb because some ISP you wont get 100% of the speed o r 90% not sure what one your using you also need to take in mind the amount of devices. for fivem 5mb per player would prob already be over doing it. the ulink mostly matters when they downloading steaming data most of it is beeing done at connecting afther that the player just sent an heartbeat towards the server and request
i hope this help an bit more
