Network thread hitch warning => everyone timeout

Hi!

I have a big problem: Players who don’t play anymore on my server, because they disregarded the server rules, said they will destroy my server. At first some DDoS attacts, then more of them, until my VPS died. I switched to a new hoster with premium DDoS protection (200€/month) and the team there is awsome and features transparent communication. 4 days no problems, but then: They found a new attack mechanism: According to my hoster my server receives only little of incomming traffic (10MBits), but spits out at half/third the maximum the connection could handle (300MBits). All that traffic from port 30120 - my fxServer… At this time the “network thread hitch warning” comes multiple times per second. All players get pings > 2000ms and then finally disconnect due to timeouts. The player count doesnt matter. First with 64, then less and less. Now we are 12.
My server literally died in 1 week.

Now I’m asking here for help: How is that possible? Could this also be, because of defective scripts? But this configuration (for the most part) was running fine for months, with 64 players on it.

Use the serverside profiler profiler record 50 to record a trace and review it to see what is causing those server thread hitch warnings, some script in your server is behind your issues. Add print statements to your server events in case someone is spamming them to lag the server, especially events involving database queries, and patch them accordingly to prevent spam.

That is basic, and I mean basic Lua stuff. If you don’t know how to use those you shouldn’t be messing with code, just saying. At least get the foundations first.

I analysed the outgoing network traffic using wireshark. So i was able to find out that extremely large LUA tables were sent several times per second. I then found the player list via the event name. Which had a massiv vulnerability in an connect event.
