When I use a VPN it works without a problem (except a higher ping)

Your ISP may be filtering your internet and blocking the connection to the server. Ask your friend to give you the link that looks like http://something-somethingelse.cfx.re/ from the server console and see if you can directly connect using that link instead of the IP address while not using your VPN
Yeah, seems like either your ISP is fully blocking connections to your friend or you have some other underlying networking issues. Unfortunately that’s out of FiveM’s control so you’re probably going to have to continue using your VPN. Hope that helps!
