My friends and I plan to run a server for FiveM. We purchased a computer with hardware dedicated to server hosting and we are almost ready to launch it. However we recently heard a lot abouts ddos attacks and want to be secured. What recommendations do you have?
Since it sounds like you’re going to be hosting from home there are a handful of ways you can attempt to prevent a botnet attack but nothing is 100%.
1: buy a good up to date router with DDOS protection.
-
Buy a business rated firewall. This is hardware not software. Keep in mind that once you place a firewall in place your network will slow down to every device behind that firewall so it’s a good idea to have really fast internet.
-
Don’t host from home. If you don’t want your home being attacked by nerds with a botnet then get a server host. A lot of hosts out there are pretty cheap but with cheap you may suffer less that great performance.
-
Make your server whitelist only and don’t list it publically. This won’t completely protect you and may not even be feasible because it’s a new server but it will limit who gets the ip address.
-
Log every single ip address that logs into your server in a database. Also log every connection through your router. If you get attacked by a nerd with a botnet you will be able to turn your logs over to the police and more times than you’d think they find the person. (Btw cyber crimes are no joke. They come with time served in federal prison and future rights to accessing internet and computers get restricted)
