How did you do development initially?

For other server owners!

How did you do development in your initial stages, we are a small startup with a vision to do something different but don’t have the massive funds to fund a developer to get us there.

How did you find a developer to come onboard for the love of the project and not just for money? We would rather have a developer who is in it to play the server and develop it because they want the server to be better.

It’s always about money - if you plan to make the server a large community/develop resources for more than like 5 or 6 people.

Just be honest with whoever you’re working with and keep expectation realistic. If you just want to do it for fun, then you should do everything yourself.

We’ve done everything on our own. Adding the framework and making sure it all works was a learning curve, but not impossible. Then adding and configuring resources again, a bit of a learning curve initally, but after a while, you’ll be able to set things up, you’ll see errors and know what you need to do to fix them.

I’m also a beginner in this field. What I do is try out existing servers, look for references, find resources on forums and GitHub, and then experiment. The most important thing is which framework to use for development. For me, as a beginner, ESX is the most suitable and easy to understand because it has a lot of material to try. And if it fails, just try again.

And money isn’t a factor, because there are so many great free resources.

Honestly, trial and error, but this was before YouTube existed. Now days with the welath of information everywhere, it should be incredibly easy.

Work slow, leverage GitHub early so you can keep track of changes in case something doesn’t work properly, and learn by doing if that’s how your mind works. If your memory isn’t great, start documents that contain error messages and fixes so that you can quickly reference solutions. You’d be surprised how many times these types of documents help resolve other issues.

One piece of advice though from someone with almost three decades of experience, don’t make it all about money ever. Once you do, you can’t really walk back from that mentality, and it becomes a grueling and frustrating experience that leads to serious burnout.

thats how i started… havent been in this game so long…2 years now …but you learn everyday…out of mistakes, achievements…server crashes and all lol…but true on the fact that money isn’t a factor

it does not need to cost anything to learn
its just time consuming to get to learn everything properly
