How Did You Develop a Player Base?

Hello! I’ve been in the Server Hosting game for a few months now. Played a bunch of cities decided to give hosting a server a go.

I installed everything manually on a Debian Linux server I had handy. To say it was a learning curve is an understatement.

Anyway, we went with a qbcore setup and have spent hours upon hours customizing everything, writing custom scripts, and adding to our city.

Yet still no one comes.

I’ve boosted +300 for 3 hour increments and I may get 1 or 2 new players but no one sticks around because we have no RolePlay value. Not enough people online to even gain traction and interest new players.

I realize everyone thinks their server is the best but I’m really proud of what we have built and just want to get a good group going so we can show other people what we have done.

So how do I get a steady playerbase? How do I show people that we have a really great server but get people to stay?

I’ve posted here, on reddit, boosted as I said, and I don’t know how to get more people interested.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I began in 2016 where barely people know my stuff and I do not. By playing it 247 I kinda get the idea of what players need and I keep developing it. Now Im about ~100 stable everyday and I push my update every month. Each update must contains something major. Keep updating and keep running. The longer you run, the more “legitimate” you are.

Normally, I am also a starter for a server. You might have heard of my server, Project Fairness. And all I can say is that to develop a player base, you just have to make sure that you always start off great.

You know how in real life, people tell you the best way to start your business (like car washing) is by getting to wash your family and your friends cars and then they’ll recommend people to you? Well, it is the same way with the server. You get your friends to play on it, they will comment about it, and you’ll gain some traction from their friends, which they will repeat to other people, and bam. People playing on your server.

As @1112876 said, each update must contain something big. Keep updating and keep running your server, and for how long you run your server, you’re seen more like a legitimate server owner.

Thank you both for your replies.

How important is the Server’s Name? Does it need to be something like “Fantastic RP” or is it realistic to get players with not so normal names?

Right now my server name is SLYVYR DOT NET because I happened to own sylvyr.net so I put it on there.

Not sure if that is putting people off or not.

Just depends, really. Get inspired by lots of other servers out there. Don’t try to do the obvious and copy them, make your own. For example, my server on the listing is Project Fairness l NOT RP l FreeRoam/Drift/PvP/Race l Freedom of Speech l 30+ Custom Vehicles l Custom NPCs

The keyword to separate stuff is with lowercase Ls because somehow this | symbol doesn’t work.
