Do i invest in a VPS or ZAP Hosting?

What would be a better investment?

I have a new server releasing this weekend hopefully, but need to arrange hosting.

VPS OR ZAP? (i want the best option to prevent Ddos as i know alot of people take down new servers.

Zap aren’t really good on protection from DDoS, however it’s a rather cheap option. My personal opinion is to stay away from using Zap, though - the hardware they provide is overused and it’s not uncommon to run into weird issues because of it. It’s a decent option for your first server as it’s rather cheap.
If you want to get the “best” option you’ll definitely need to rent a VPS - OVH would be a good start.

are you able to help me with it?

With what?

just some guidance in regards to setting up vps?

I’m not very knowledgeable on that stuff, sorry. I suggest looking up some tutorials online.

Yeah i always turn to the web when in need haha, just thought you may be of use. Thanks anyways.

There are thousands of tutorials of using a VPS. In the end it’s nothing special. If you get a Windows VPS it’s literally just like your own PC. If you are get a Linux VPS is not much you need to touch at all.

BUT if you do NOT have anything setup at all yet, DO NOT SPEND MONEY. First of setup an FXServer on your own PC. Get it setup according to how you want it. Just how you want. After doing that, you will realize if you actually want to run a server or not. It’s NOT as fun always as everyone thinks. You need to be practical with a PC and FXServer. You need to be able to quickly fix small things in the scripts you download. You also need to be able to do basic programming to create your own little scripts or additions to scripts.

You also cannot get the “best option to prevent DDoS”. They are all practically the same. Moreover you wont need extreme DDoS options as you are an unknown server, nobody will want to attack you. If you are worried about DDoS you should learn a lot more about DDoS than choose between ZAP Hosting or “A VPS”.

In theory ZAP hosting is ALWAYS better because you mentioned ZAP or a random unknown VPS company. A VPS can be any random crap and completely useless against DDoS. If you get ZAP you know what you get, which isn’t great.

My advice:

  1. Setup everything from beginning to end first ON YOUR OWN PC and even play with some friends there for a while
  2. Get a VPS at OVH (or even better a Dedicated server from daughter company SoYouStart for around $40)
  3. Get ZAP VPS
  4. Get ZAP gameserver

But honestly, everything has their use case. Not every FXServer has the same requirements, budget and what not. Just be normal, don’t go spend a shit ton of money on hardware you will never use. Start slaw, start close. Then expand out. Dont spend more than 20$ at the ultra beginning.

Thanks for the detailed response.
I have set up a server on my own computer along with Xammp etc. Im not amazing with “lua” yet but im learning day by day. As things go wrong and i fix them, i am learning.

I noticed you said if i was to get a Linux vps i would not need to touch it? (would you say Linux OS is better to get to host Fivem server?

Another thing, would you happen to know of any decent “daughter companies” that provide decent hosting?

I get what your saying in regards to starting with minimal costs, but i feel although the start is the MAIN point to win over your players. (they don’t want any latency or server down issues)

Great! Keep on doing that until you are comfortable. You will be wasting money if you start spending money on something you wont learn anything with. It’s important to get comfortable with the code before you go out there. There are 10000000000000000000000000000000000x (exaggerated of course), but a lot of servers that you won’t be able to compete against. Its important to get good servers in the public and not all these people that they “need” a server out in the public making the server list in the end bad, copied pasted, ESX/vRP servers.

I never said that, but personally for me it’s easier nowadays.

Yes, like i said SoYouStart.

No, the more you pay the not more you are going to attract. If you have a 10 man SUV, doesn’t mean 10 will actually use it if you only have 4 family members. You need to gradually build a community. I personally don’t think you are ready for a public server, but if you really want to and want to try it, SPEND MAX 20$!!! Get a VPS at OVH for example and just setup a 48 slot server MAX. NO YOU DONT NEED 64. You don’t even have 64 players. Be humble and grow one part at a time.

Ok thanks, noted.
I have a discord server with 83 members, who i have known for a while (met them playing various other FiveM servers) and they are supporting my journey. So i am going to produce a server, whether i need to pay for help deving it also. Its gonna be a good experience, and nothing better to learn then jumping in the deep end.

Thanks for your help

Looking for the same thing here, I see you mention ZAP Hosting or VPS, I currently have zap hosting for my server with my buds but want to move to a VPS. So many people say to avoid zap but I see you have advice to try get a zap vps higher than a gameserver. I have that gameserver and it is okay but I think like you said in the post, keep things local for now until ready to release and spend money, but I do have eyes on OVH. I will see what I want to do thank you for that detailed text

If you’re looking to prevent DDoS attacks, investing in a VPS would probably be the better option. However, it’s important to do your research and choose a reputable provider that has good security measures in place. I’ve heard good things about OVH, so that could be a good option for you to consider. Another option could be to buy dedicated server, which can provide even more security and control over your hosting environment. Just make sure to consider your budget and what features are most important to you before making a decision. Good luck with your server release!

For hosting fivem I would probally reccomend a vps or dedicated server with good ddos protection since the community can be toxic at times, I would checkout this provider or this one to be honest they both use path.net ddos protection and seem to be pretty reputable
