So I keep getting yelled at about not changing my name in one of my servers, I dont want to go through the hassle of changing my name on steam every time I play on fivem. So I tried going into the settings tab and changing my name through there however it does seem to work, and I cant join unless I have steam up, was that nickname ever actually intended to be used and well it ever actually work. I saw some older posts with this same problem from 2017, so this does seem to be long lasting problem.

It’s not a problem, just something that some users want, but won’t get. If you don’t want to use your Steam name, simply don’t run Steam. FiveM prioritizes your Steam name over FiveM if it is launched.
If the server requires you to run Steam, then I think it’s a small “price you pay” to change your Steam name whenever you do play on it. If you don’t like their policy, perhaps play somewhere else.
