What is the issue you’re having?
Since approximately two months ago, RedM has become unstable and now consistently crashes during startup before I can join any server.
The issue started after a combination of Windows, NVIDIA and RedM updates. Before that, RedM had been working perfectly on the same hardware.
Different crash signatures have been observed during the investigation, including:
VK_ERROR_OUT_OF_DEVICE_MEMORY
Access Violation (0xC0000005)
glue.dll
KERNELBASE.dll
gameoverlayrenderer64.dll (single occurrence)
The crash behaviour is inconsistent. During the investigation there were occasions where RedM launched successfully and I was able to play for about an hour without any crashes. However, most of the time the game crashes immediately during startup, often before the main game window is fully initialized.
The base game (Red Dead Redemption 2) works perfectly outside RedM. It launches normally, runs at maximum settings and has never crashed.
What have you tried already to fix the issue?
A comprehensive investigation has already been performed.
RedM
- Completely reinstalled RedM.
- Deleted all CitizenFX and RedM cache folders.
- Switched from Release to Canary build.
- Removed every RedM configuration and downloaded everything again.
Windows
- Ran SFC and DISM.
- Configured Windows Page File (Virtual Memory) correctly.
- Tested both automatic and manual page file configurations.
- Performed multiple clean boots with all non-Microsoft services disabled.
- Rebooted after every major configuration change.
NVIDIA
- Reinstalled NVIDIA drivers.
- Tested different driver versions.
- Reset NVIDIA Control Panel settings.
- Closed NVIDIA App and NVIDIA Control Panel during testing.
BIOS
- Verified BIOS settings.
- Changed Primary Display to PEG/PCIe.
- Confirmed iGPU Multi Monitor configuration.
Steam / Third-party software
- Disabled Steam Overlay.
- Completely uninstalled Medal.
- Closed Discord.
- Closed Xbox services.
- Tested with Steam running and with only the minimum required Steam components.
Hardware tests
- Tested with one monitor only.
- Tested with both monitors connected.
- Multiple reboots between configurations.
Debugging
- Analysed multiple crash dumps using WinDbg.
- Used Process Explorer to inspect loaded modules.
- Used Process Monitor (ProcMon) to trace DLL loading.
- Generated Windows Error Reporting full dumps.
- Compared successful and failed startup attempts.
- Investigated loaded modules including:
- glue.dll
- CitizenGame.dll
- legitimacy.dll
- steam_api64.dll
- vulkan-1.dll
- nvapi64.dll
Results
- No missing runtime DLLs were found.
- No significant ACCESS DENIED errors were detected.
- No missing files were identified.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 itself works correctly.
- The investigation currently points towards an internal RedM/CitizenFX startup failure rather than a corrupted RDR2 installation.

Additional comments
I have spent several days investigating this issue using professional debugging tools.
Multiple crash dumps, WinDbg sessions, Process Monitor traces and Process Explorer inspections have been analysed.
The investigation has ruled out common causes such as corrupted game files, missing runtime DLLs, page file configuration, Steam Overlay, Medal, NTFS permissions and general GPU instability.
The crash appears to occur during the RedM bootstrap process after the required runtime libraries have already been loaded.
I can provide:
- Multiple crash dumps (.dmp)
- WinDbg analysis
- Process Monitor (.PML) traces
- Process Explorer screenshots
- Complete crash logs
- Additional diagnostic information upon request
The base game (Red Dead Redemption 2) remains completely stable and only RedM is affected.
