Error updating / installing Five M (error = 255)

Did you try to delete caches.xml and try again?
I’ve deleted everything from within the AppData folder and any other file/folder I can find relating to FiveM. Attempting to clean install it and still getting the same error message.

What did you do to get this issue?
Started FiveM today, which immediately started to automatically update. Received this error message every time I tried to start. Deleted all files and folders from my PC in an attempt to install FiveM again, and now I’m getting this same error message during installation - an error message which is literally impossible since it can’t already be running anything if I shut the process down and then deleted all of the files and folders.

Okay well it appears I’m an idiot - I noticed every time I got this error I also got a notification that Windows Defender had found a trojan (which I know many installation programs often appear as). After turning off Real-Time Protection it seems to be installing FiveM with no further issues.

I don’t know how to delete this thread or mark it as solved so if someone can go ahead and do that for me I’d be grateful.

Hello @Nerdsauce Ty for your topic, how can you turn off “Real Time Protection” ? Do you mean that you turned off Windows defender ? Cause i have the same issue and turning off windows defender dont change anything for me !

Hi Nerdsauce,
I have exactly the same issue. However, I don’t think your solution is absolute…but more of a temporary fix.
Turning off “real-time protection” only solves it for that particular instance. I am forced to repeat this step each and every time I attempt to launch FiveM.
I hope there is a more permanent solution that will also not leave our systems vulnerable.
