Early-exit trap crash on startup - RDR2_b1491.exe+1000

What is the issue you’re having?

RedM crashes on startup with “Early-exit trap” (RDR2_b1491.exe+1000) right after GPU initialization. RDR2 works fine standalone. Was working yesterday, started crashing today after NVIDIA App update. Tried everything: reinstall, driver downgrade, cache clear, VBS disable, API switch - nothing works.

What have you tried already to fix the issue?

  • Cleared RedM cache multiple times
  • Full reinstall of RedM (3 times)
  • Added Windows Defender exclusions for RedM and RDR2 folders
  • Verified RDR2 game files via Rockstar Launcher
  • Downgraded NVIDIA driver from 610.47 to 576.88
  • Switched API between DX12 and Vulkan in system.xml
  • Set DisableVulkan=1 in CitizenFX.ini
  • Disabled VBS / Core Isolation / Hypervisor via bcdedit
  • Killed all NVIDIA services and processes before launching
  • Deleted NVIDIA shader caches (DXCache, GLCache)
  • Deleted RedM game-storage cached exe and game_files.dat
  • Created symlink for mismatched Rockstar Launcher install path
  • Multiple PC reboots
  • No mods or ASI loaders in RDR2 folder

What server did you get this issue on?

N/A - The crash happens during RedM startup before reaching any server. The launcher never fully loads.

Additional comments

The crash consistently happens ~2 seconds after GPU initialization during RedM startup.

Log pattern every time:

  1. All pre-gameload components load successfully
  2. Mumble audio initializes
  3. GPU detected: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, Vulkan API 1.4.341
  4. Immediate crash: RDR2_b1491.exe+1000

Crash hash key: sierra-mike-double
RDR2 version: 1.0.1491.50 (installed via Rockstar Games Launcher)
RDR2 runs fine standalone - only crashes through RedM.

RedM was working fine on June 5th. The issue started June 6th after an automatic NVIDIA App update (to version 11.0.8.244). Even after downgrading the driver from 610.47 to 576.88, the crash persists.

Also noticed the Rockstar Launcher reports a wrong install path (C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Games\Red Dead Redemption 2) while the actual path is (C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2). Created a symlink but it didn’t fix it.

A recent Steam Client Beta update appears to be causing a new wave of Early-Exit Trap errors for RedM users. If RedM suddenly began crashing, failing to launch, or showing an Early-Exit Trap error, disabling Steam Client Beta Participation has resolved the issue for many users.

There is currently a change to the Steam Overlay on the Steam Beta branch that is triggering Early-Exit Trap errors.

Recommended fix:

  1. Open SteamSettingsInterface.
  2. Set Client Beta Participation to No beta chosen.
  3. Restart Steam and launch RedM again.

I seem to be having the same issue, I reinstalled both RedM & RDR2, verified files, cleared my cache yet nothing, nada, works.

Thank you very much, I will try it if it happens again.Thank you so much, I’ll try it if it happens again.

Unfortunately , I had to completely reformat my computer.

I don’t have the game on Steam; I have it on Rockstar. I was wondering if it was something wrong with my operating system, since it was working better after so much testing and messing with files. The solution was to format my computer.

It doesn’t matter which launcher you own RedM on. The problem is coming from the Steam Overlay trying to load into RedM if Steam is open at all. RedM always tries to load the Steam Overlay.

I should’ve included that in here too!

@merlelowe Early-exit trap crash on startup - RDR2_b1491.exe+1000 - #3 by xchasex Did you try this?

And if I have the Steam beta disabled and the error still persists, how can I fix it?

I have the same problem (on Win 10). Steam Beta was already disabled, but RedM still won’t launch, and the error code is the same, too.
